Description: The Botanist
Spirit: Gin
Background: Today we have an unlikely source to think of a gin. Bruichladdich is more known for producing scotch on the isle of Islay (and they are one of my favorite producers) but they also make a gin that they take great pride in. Using 22 wildly and locally foraged botanicals found on the island (all of which are listed on their site), let’s see how their dry gin stacks up to their whisky. No, this is not peated.
Distillery – Bruichladdich
Bottler – Bruichladdich
Brand – The Botanist
Selection – N/A
ABV – 46%
Age – Unaged
Nose – Nice juniper that isn’t overwhelming, lavender, clove, bright citrus peel, peppercorn, light cinnamon bark
Taste – Citrus gets a bit more tart, coriander, lavender, light and creamy texture, a hint of mint
Finish – Dryness comes in, bit more savory with sage, slightly bitter mint, white pepper, cinnamon bark
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: This was really pleasant. I definitely find myself preferring botanical gins, but this one had a nice balance without juniper nor any of the botanicals being overpowering. Great for cocktails and even for sipping on the rocks during the summer. I almost wish it had a little bit more of that laddie lactic note and a bit more creaminess to it, but I’m just nitpicking at this point. I’ll definitely be keeping a bottle in my bar, and with wide distribution and about $35 a bottle, you should too.
