Description: Cadenhead’s Sapucaia Cachaca 10 Year
Spirit: Cachaca
Background: An interesting one here, as this is a Brazilian Cachaca distilled at the Sapucaia Distillery, aged for 10 years in oak barrels, and then bottled as a single cask by Cadenhead’s in the UK without chillfiltration nor coloring.
Distillery – Sapucaia
Bottler – Cadenhead’s
Brand – Cadenhead’s
Selection – N/A
ABV – 40.3%
Age – 10 Years
Nose – Wet hay, grassy, decent amount of oak, lemon juice, sweet milk, cocoa, vanilla bean, almost a little of butterscotch hard candy too.
Taste – Sweet but thin: cream, vanilla, hay, milk chocolate, honey
Finish – Extremely short. Just a slight tingle of baking spices and some toasted oak. But even that tingle is light and fleeting.
Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? Yes, it’s interesting and tasty enough to warrant getting a bottle
Thoughts: I honestly quite liked this. Cane juice can always be a bit polarizing but I think the 10 years really helped round out some notes that might normally be a bit rough. From what I’ve gathered, 10 years is pretty long for cachaca so I definitely would want to try and see how younger stuff holds up. The biggest thing is that the finish is just so short. I believe 48% is the upper limit for cachaca regulations, but this just needs some proof points to bring out that complexity of the age that feels like it is lingering in there.
