Review #258 – Copper & Kings Apple Brandy Finished in a Port Cask

Review #: 258
Description: Copper & Kings Apple Brandy Finished in a Port Cask
Spirit: Brandy

Background: This is a bottling from Copper and Kings that was initially aged for 2 years and 4 months in an ex-bourbon cask before being transferred into a Ruby Port cask for an additional 2 years and 8 months.  Bottled at cask strength without chillfiltering, this was tasted blind before revealing the contents.

Distillery – Copper & Kings

Bottler – Copper & Kings

Brand – Copper & Kings

Selection – N/A

ABV – 67%

Age – 5 Years

Nose – Some sharpness on the nose with green apple, peppermint, fresh cut grass.  Some sweetness in there. Coffee beans and apple cider, black tea with honey.  Ethanol is a bit punchy.
Taste – Honeycomb, cooked apples, peaches, vanilla
Finish – So much apple cider, TONS of ginger and cinnamon, buttery pie crust, clove

Guess: Some sort of Bourbon finished in applejack casks? 55-60% abv in the 6 year range??

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? At $65, yes because it is super interesting.

Thoughts: Well, at least I got apple brandy and bourbon influence.  The apple really came through nicely as cider and apple pie.  The nose was super funky and interesting which skewed my guess towards a finished whiskey.  Really enjoyable and at 67%, I think it drank a little less than that.  This would be a fun bottle to have and especially to play around with some cocktails while mostly drinking neat.
