Description: Conniption Navy Strength Gin
Spirit: Gin
Background: This is a gin coming out of Durham Distillery. Their gin is produced from vapor infusion in a pot still. It uses Indian coriander, caraway, rosemary, and cardamom in conjunction with Juniper and Cassia. They then use citrus and fig that are vacuumed distilled at room temperature to blend into the base. Huh. Interesting. This navy strength takes their regular Conniption gin and bumps the proof up to 57%.
Distillery – Durham Distillery
Bottler – Durham Distillery
Brand – Conniption
Selection – N/A
ABV – 57%
Age – Unaged
Nose – Pretty earthy, lots of cardamom, peppercorn, coriander, rosemary. Does a good job at getting across those botanicals. A tiny bit of orange and lime citrus are in there. Pine sap comes in but is pretty balanced.
Taste – Very floral, lavender, pretty creamy and subtle citrus sweetness with orange peel, coriander, lemon candy
Finish – Gets a bit aggressive, lots of peppermint and pine, juniper comes in harder and a bit bitter along with cracked black pepper. Kind of tacky on the tongue.
Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? I don’t think I would get another one
Thoughts: The biggest issue I’m having here is the finish. Towards the end of the bottle, I think the air has helped a little to tone down the heat and aggression, but it is still aggressive. Unfortunately, that heat really comes through and negates most of the positives, even in cocktails. I’m always happy with craft producers putting out higher proofed spirits, but this one just misses the mark a little for me.
