Nose – Lots of candied lemon peel, sweet and sour sauce, burnt toast with orange marmalade, nice vanilla in there too, ripe sourdough starter, touch of menthol on the back end
Taste – Very creamy and syrupy mouthfeel, vanilla, light caramel, baking chocolate, some bitter lemon peel sneaks in, some cinnamon cereal notes too
Finish – More peppery malt comes in, burnt toast that brings in just a little bit of sourness but also some sweetness, almost a little bit of fruity yogurt tang to it. Kind of a weird finish but it works.
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: This was a fun little pour. Like some of the other Ultimate bottlings of lesser known distilleries, this had some notes that could overtake the spirit and make it negative, but the sour and bitter notes never stepped out of line and added to the interesting aspect rather than take away. This had been available for about $55 and at that cost, I think I’d be willing to take a flyer on a bottle.
