Review #286 – 1800 Silver

Review #: 286
Description: 1800 Silver
Spirit: Tequila

Background: This is a pretty common tequila that is widely available.  It does use 100% Blue Weber agave and is double distilled through a column still.  It uses a roller mill and autoclave before fermenting in stainless steel.  It probably has some additives but is marketed as being high quality, that is how I found myself with a bottle of it before knowing to do more research.  It is owned by the same company as Jose Cuervo and also distilled at La Rojena Distillery.

Distillery – La Rojena

Bottler – La Rojena

Brand – 1800

Selection – N/A

ABV – 40%

Age – NAS

Nose – Yep, that’s the smell I remember from college.  Sweet agave, vanilla, lemongrass, sweet bell pepper
Taste –  Lots of sweet almond and vanilla.  There’s really little else there.  Maybe a little bit of roasted nuttiness?  It’s not much though
Finish – Minerality, agave, black pepper, roasted nuts come in more, still lots of sweetness lasts a bit cloyingly on the tongue

Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No

Thoughts: Apparently blancos are not supposed to be allowed additives but this just tasted way too artificial to me.  The nose and finish had some nice notes of agave that I like, but the taste was clearly meant for someone who is looking to sip on something sweet and straightforward.  Ultimately, the sweetness lasts too long and is too pronounced for me.  I used most of this bottle for margaritas which it is fine for, but not for much else.
