Review #294 – Pursuit United (Batch #2)

Review #: 294
Description: Pursuit United (Batch #2)
Spirit: Bourbon

Background: This is the second release of the blended bourbon from the minds behind the Bourbon Pursuit Podcast and Pursuit Series.  This is a blend of Kentucky (Bardstown Bourbon Company), Tennessee (Undisclosed but not Dickel) and NY (Finger Lakes Distilling) Bourbon.  This encompasses both rye and wheated bourbons and comes bottled at 54% ABV.  No age statement.

Distillery – Various

Bottler – Pursuit Spirits

Brand – Pursuit United

Selection – N/A

ABV – 54%

Age – NAS

Nose – Sweet cola, pretzel sticks, earthy chocolate and oak, muted cherry.  There’s a strong, earthy roasted grain note.  Not super youthful or really bad, but definitely apparent.
Taste – Caramel corn, vanilla, honey, milk chocolate
Finish – Lots of toastiness comes in: oak and coffee beans, almost a little bit of charred bbq sauce, warm apple pie with melting vanilla ice cream, toasted marshmallow sneaks in towards the end.

Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes.  At $55-$65 I think it is a very fair value for what it is.

Thoughts: Props to the Bourbon Pursuit guys for pulling this off.  I’m not sure how much different this batch is versus the first release, but I’m interested to see the similarities as they move forward.  The earthy note on the nose I could see putting some people off, but the palate is fairly straightforward and sweet, and then a nice complex finish.  At no point does it taste hot or young though.  It’s been really enjoyable to sip and would feel a little bad throwing this in a cocktail. Well done.
