Description: TCRL Panama 2013
Spirit: Rum
Background: Another of La Maison Du Whisky’s rum line, this one was distilled in 2013 at Beenleigh Distillery from local molasses in a pot still. It was aged for 4 years in Australia in French Oak before spending another 2 years in Europe in ex-Cognac. Bottled at 48%.
Distillery – Beenleigh
Bottler – La Maison Du Whisky
Brand – Transcontinental Rum Line
Selection – N/A
ABV – 48%
Age – 6 Years
Nose – Some nice brightness from the french oak, sharp grape, brown sugar, dark chocolate. Lacks some of that heavy, caramel and molasses sweetness you’d normally get from spanish style. Faint hint of some banana. More air brings more oak and chocolate
Taste – Here’s where the sweetness comes in, banana, caramel, molasses, rich oak, black tea
Finish – Lots of spice, oak, bitter chocolate, burnt sugar, little bit of black tea
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: Normally something like this I might complain needs a bump in proof, but this was nice and had good depth where it’s at. The finish gets a little bitter but never crosses the threshold to being detracting. At around $50, I think this is solid and a good alternative to some of the more common similar styles that are available.
