Review #359 – Habitation Velier Privateer Unaged New England Single Rum

Review #359 – Habitation Velier Privateer Unaged New England Single Rum

Review #: 359
Description: Habitation Velier Privateer Unaged New England Single Rum
Spirit: Rum

Background: In combination with the aged release, Velier worked with Privateer to release an unaged, full pot still, molasses rum.  Using sugar cane from a volcanic region of Guatemala, it comes in at 375.1 gr/hpla of congeners so a respectable level of funkiness.  The aged released show how well they can manage their casks, so can this follow suite and showcase their distillate to the world?

Distillery – Privateer

Bottler – Habitation Velier

Brand – Habitation Velier

Selection – N/A

ABV – 62%

Age – Unaged

Nose – Green apple, dried pear, morning dew, pine sol cleaning solution.  I recently got to go to a bourbon distillery and try their new make and this has a similar buttery-ness to it
Taste – Fruit really pops with sweet apple and pear, light caramel, silky vanilla
Finish – Molasses really ramps up and makes itself known with this really nice, dark, roasted quality to it.  Like the fruits started to get cooked and buttery.  Apple pie, pear crumble, cinnamon syrup, coating wax

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: I struggled a bit with the score on this.  This is really good and distinct rum. It’s not like the other fruity, unaged ones I’ve had that smack you with tropical fruits and funky sweetness.  This is so cohesive.  I love when a sip gives you a full experience.  This is like prepping an apple/pear pie, putting it in the oven, and tasting it all in one sip.  I tend to lean that hard pop, but I thoroughly enjoyed this experience for being nuanced and setting itself apart.  I think it’s a great way to represent yourself on an international level (again).
