Description: Tomatin 2001 PX Handfill
Spirit: Scotch
Background: This is a distillery bottling from Tomatin. It was distilled in 2001 and spent 10 years in a bourbon cask before then spending 9 years in a Pedro Ximenez cask and then being bottled at cask strength. Sounds good to me so let’s see how it drinks.
Distillery – Tomatin
Bottler – Tomatin
Brand – Tomatin
Selection – N/A
ABV – 53.7%
Age – 19 Years
Nose – Rich red apple, honeycomb, ginger snap cookie, maple & brown sugar, fresh bread, little bit of earthy oak in there
Taste – Caramel apple, raisins, butterscotch, graham cracker, marshmallow (Just missing a bit of chocolate to make it a s’more)
Finish – Lots of toasty oak and malt, fresh bread, heat lingers but it’s just a pleasant warmth rather than a spice or bitterness.
Score: 8
Would I buy a bottle? I’m not sure what these cost, but I would be inclined to get it if I was at the distillery.
Thoughts: Lovely toastiness and sweetness. The PX isn’t really dominant but works so well with the malt. Not overly sweet either but still pretty dessert-y. Just really enjoyable, high quality scotch.
