Review #379 – Golden Devil 2007 Hampden CH

Review #379 – Golden Devil 2007 Hampden C<>H

Review #: 379
Description: Golden Devil 2007 Hampden C<>H
Spirit: Rum

Background: This is a bottling of Hampden’s high ester rum.  Under the marque of C<>H (second highest only to DOK) this is exclusively from K&L Wines in California.  Not a ton of other information I can find on the cask other than it is 12 years old and bottled at a cask strength of 64.1%.

Distillery – Hampden

Bottler – Golden Devil

Brand – Golden Devil

Selection – K&L Wines

ABV – 64.1%

Age – 12 Years

Nose – Lots of funk, industrial, plastic, rotten banana, honey, brown sugar, apple sauce.  Air time starts to bring in a bit more chocolate and richness
Taste – SUPER savory, like no sweetness in this: Overcooked bacon, sweaty gym sock, plastic, lemon, vegetable stock
Finish – Green apple, molten plastic, runts candy, lemon peel.  Air time gives it more oak, burnt chocolate, tiny bit of sugary sweetness

Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes.  This is one of the weirdest *aged* spirit I think I’ve tasted

Thoughts: I was not prepared for how savory this would be, and probably contributed to the intense, odd notes that I have.  I stand by them, but some air time and brain calibration some more roasted qualities came out.  Still super savory and by no means a dessert rum, but it is very interesting, very complex, and a good value, because I would feel like every pour would give you a journey
