Review #403 – Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel: r/Bourbon

Review #403 – Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel: r/Bourbon

Review #: 402
Description: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel: r/Bourbon
Spirit: Bourbon

Background: A single barrel of Jack Daniel’s, these at barrel proof can really win over drinkers who might not think of the Tennessee producer as being bourbon.  But the lower, 47% barrels also can shine and this one I’ve used to help introduce some friends and casual drinkers into the world of single barrels without blowing out their taste buds in proof.  But now that I sit down and analyze it, is it a good choice to bring people in?  Let’s find out.

Distillery – Jack Daniel’s

Bottler – Jack Daniel’s

Brand – Jack Daniel’s

Selection – r/Bourbon

ABV – 47%

Age – NAS

Nose – Bubblegum, banana bread, almond cookies, corn bread, cherry, freshly toasted bread, caramel corn.  Super sweet and rich on the nose with a touch of oak hiding in the back of it.
Taste – Oak really ramps up, vanilla extract, walnut banana bread
Finish – Continuing oakiness, more roasted nuts, caramel, prickel of oak and pepper linger nicely without being too aggressive

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? For me to drink? Probably not.  But I stand by thinking this is a great bottle to share and get people a bit more interested in single barrels and the r/bourbon program (and that JD goes far beyond the standard No. 7)

Thoughts: Man, the nose on this thing was amazing and super complex.  The taste is nice and and finish isn’t aggressive, but the oak takes over and sucks away the sweetness.  It could make it a bit harder to share with someone who likes more sweetness, but this easily shows the ability that Jack Daniel’s can provide and to me, the banana wasn’t overwhelming.  I’ll definitely continue to share this one.
