Description: Privateer Distiller’s Drawer #126 “Mirth”
Spirit: Rum
Background:
Another single barrel released from the Privateer Distillery. This time it is 5 years and 1 month old, aged exclusively in New American Oak. I have been a big fan of their new oak offerings but most have been younger, so this is my first taste with some solid age on them. Let’s see how they compare.
*Full Disclosure* This bottle was provided to me by Privateer at no cost without any conditions. My thoughts are my own.
Distillery – Privateer
Bottler – Privateer
Brand – Privateer
Selection – N/A
ABV – 57.4%
Age – 5 Years
Nose – Oh yeah, that reminds me of other privateers, molasses, heavy vanilla, maple syrup, cinnamon, toasted marshmallow, there is a distinctive oak backbone but very nicely integrated
Taste – Thick, rich, and buttery. Maple syrup, vanilla cream, maraschino cherry, dark chocolate, toasted oak
Finish – Peppery, oaky, toasted marshmallow, cinnamon spice, a little savory on the spices as well as the tingle lingers
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: There’s a lot of familiarity here but the extra age definitely shows another layer of depth that shows where they are going. There’s still a lot of dessert-y aspects to it that while I like, I can see why some might not love it as much. But I think Privateer have shown that they know how to manage barrels so well, that with more age this will only become more balanced and nuanced.
