Review #425 – Starlight Port Cask Finish Single Barrel

Review #425 – Starlight Port Cask Finish Single Barrel

Review #: 425
Description: Starlight Port Cask Finish Single Barrel
Spirit: Bourbon

Background: This is a single barrel offering of bourbon finished in a port cask offered by the distillery in Indiana.  Starlight has been doing a wide range of cask finishes, so no surprise they have a port offering.  This one is 5 years old and states that it spent over 8 months in the port barrel.  Side note: I am all for distilleries having 375ml bottles of releases.  Please do more to make it easier to try and less of a volume and financial commitment.  This is barrel no. FB121

Distillery – Starlight

Bottler – Starlight

Brand – Starlight

Selection – N/A

ABV – 53.1%

Age – 5 Years

Nose – Rich on the nose with roasted nuts, buttered popcorn, dark cherries and plums, almost some black tea, peppery oak
Taste – Richness carries into the palate, rich buttery popcorn, cherry cordial, caramel sauce, cooked apple, peanut brittle
Finish – Kettle corn, caramel, rich coffee, toasted tree nuts, smoked chocolate, oak is present and really well integrated.  A touch peppery and warm

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes, especially at 375ml

Thoughts: Where the Chatt is light and popping with fruit, this is much richer, and developed.  Not a hit on Chatt, but the extra age on this shows another layer of depth and flavor.  They are doing some exciting things at Starlight and people should definitely be taking notice.
