Review #521 – Blaum Bros. Knotter Rye: Elixir Spirits “Parking Lot Pick”

Review #: 521
Description: Blaum Bros. Knotter Rye: Elixir Spirits “Parking Lot Pick”
Spirit: Rye

Background: 30 for 30: Day 15.  Blaum Brothers is based out of Illinois but of course, getting their most famous barrels from MGP.  Like a few other bottlers, they had some high age statements at decent prices right at the boom that hit the secondary market and took off.  This one was selected by Elixir Spirits (I believe in Tennessee) and is 5 years old.

Distillery – MGP

Bottler – Blaum Brothers

Brand – Blaum Brothers

Selection – Elixir Spirits

ABV – 61.9%

Age – 5 Years

Nose – Lots of brown sugar, ginger bread, cocoa, coffee beans, freshly baked bread, even some peanut brittle, lots of baking spices.  Very rich and not much fruit coming through
Taste – Starts sweet with some caramel and vanilla but then follows the nose and gets very roast-y and spicy.  Gingerbread, cocoa, tobacco
Finish – Long and spicy; gingerbread, coffee, toast, nutmeg, a hint of some tart cherry.  Dry and a touch hot

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Not sure on price, but if it was around $60 or so I would think that’s fair

Thoughts: This is one of those pours that really makes the long series interesting.  Very different from the other ryes here (and in general).  Really leans oaky with the leather and dryness despite the age.  I don’t really smoke, but bet this would go great with a cigar.
