Review #542 – Hampden HLCF Classic

Review #542 – Hampden HLCF Classic

Review #: 542
Description: Hampden HLCF Classic
Spirit: Rum

Background: This is an overproof rum from the Jamaican distillery.  Distilled using their HLCF mark, it comes in around 470 gr/hpla of esters and is aged for 4 years.

Distillery – Hampden

Bottler – Hampden

Brand – Hampden

Selection – N/A

ABV – 60%

Age – 4 Years

Nose – Juicy fruit, overripe pineapple, burnt marshmallow, locker room sweat, a bit of industrial funk but not overpowering or distracting
Taste – Surprisingly the fruit really drops from bright and popping to very rich; maraschino cherry, dark caramel, sweet oak, brownie batter, pecan pie filling
Finish – Charred pineapple, burnt chocolate, sweet diesel fumes and a touch of the plastic funk in there.  A bit on the dry side but not horrible.

Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: Just a really solid balancing of sweetness, funk, and oak.  I wish a bit more of the fruit on the nose translated to the taste, but it still had fruit influence and I won’t ever be upset about it being rich with a strong texture.
