Review #55 – The Funk

Review #55 – The Funk

Review #: 55
Description: The Funk Unaged Jamaican Rum
Spirit: Rum

Background: The Funk is an independent bottling of unaged, pot still, and estery Jamaican rum from Worth Park Estate. After DOK woke something in me about Jamaican funk, let’s see how this does.

Distillery – Worthy Park Estate

Bottler – Proof and Wood

Brand – The Funk

Selection – N/A

ABV – 50%

Age – Unaged

Nose – Overripe bananas, mango, burnt rubber, freshly dug up earth, stinging ethanol
Taste –  Like biting into a mild chili pepper, kind of a watery but earthy sweetness and heat, thin mouthfeel
Finish – sweetness moves to more molasses and sugar, rotting funk, surprisingly short

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: I think I may have done myself a disservice by destroying my funk experience with DOK, because this doesn’t punch like it. But this isn’t trying to be DOK. Instead, I think it’s a great entry into some tasty funk, and great to see a bottle marketed towards getting into bars to use for cocktails. Under $25, it’s a good value to keep on hand.
