Review #: 550
Description: Old Fitzgerald Spring 2020
Spirit: Bourbon
Background:
Continuing the blind reviews from Heaven Hill, this is the Spring 2020 release of Old Fitzgerald and their decanter series. This wheated bourbon was aged for 9 years, so on the younger side of the releases.
This was tasted blind and notes were made prior to reveal, so keep that in mind while reading.
Distillery – Heaven Hill
Bottler – Heaven Hill
Brand –Old Fitzgerald
Selection – N/A
ABV – 50%
Age – 9 Years
Nose – Gingerbread, vanilla, sour raspberry jolly rancher, chocolate chili, red apple, cinnamon bun icing, sweet bread
Taste – Sweet raw apple, vanilla and light caramel, bruleed banana, cake batter, brown butter
Finish – Sweet bread (like challah, not something with a glaze) maybe even buttered pastry dough, chocolate, sweet and toasted oak, I think there is some sweet corn bread in there too.
Guess: I’m like 90% sure this is bourbon (worried some American Single Malt could sneak in). I would maybe think like a KC single barrel but I’m not getting any nuttiness. But maybe in the 12 year range and 60-63% ABV?
Score: 8
Would I buy a bottle? This seems to be before the MSRP jumped a bit. At $90 this would be an absolute steal today.
Thoughts: Lots of punch here and I love the sweet bread. It comes across across sophisticated rather than grainy and the distillate not meshing with the barrel.
