Description: New Riff Malted Rye
Spirit: Rye
Background: This is a standard release in the New Riff portfolio. I believe it was the first core product with a 6 year age statement. It’s also made using 100% malted rye, which definitely makes it an exciting new product in the market (even now a bit after its initial release). Not sure if there are any other readily available bottles of 100% rye out there. Much like most of New Riff’s other products, it’s also Bottled-In-Bond.
Distillery – New Riff
Bottler – New Riff
Brand – New Riff
Selection – N/A
ABV – 50%
Age – 6 Years
Nose – Lots of spicy rye, spearmint, honey wheat bread, gingersnap cookie, opens up with more fruit and sweetness. Reminds me of like a Linzer cookie or even a Fig Newton
Taste – Strawberry frosting, almond cookie, cherry juice, honey, milk chocolate
Finish – Dark cherry sweetness stays under a big pop of rye and savory spices. Very soothing warm that lingers in the mouth rather than just the throat
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: An excellent whisky. I think it is that malting that brings out those pastry notes. The strawberry note is something that has always come through for me but it is delightful and is something so unique to this. This is just such a good bottle for sipping or cocktails, but definitely for sharing. Glad they took the risk and have it come out to a standard product.
