Review #595 – New Riff High Note: Bohemian Wheated Bourbon

Review #595 – New Riff High Note: Bohemian Wheated Bourbon

Review #: 595
Description: New Riff High Note: Bohemian Wheated Bourbon
Spirit: Bourbon

Background: Another special release, this one utilizes floor-malted Bohemian wheat as an ingredient.  Typically found in wheat beer, it is used with a few other types of wheat to make a 2-grain bourbon.  65% corn, 18% Bohemian malted wheat, 10% unmalted wheat, and 7% dark wheat, this really stands out as a deviation from the norm for New Riff.  Aged 8 years and bottled without dilution or filtration.

Distillery – New Riff

Bottler – New Riff

Brand – New Riff

Selection – N/A

ABV – 58.5%

Age – 8 Years

Nose – Wheat definitely comes in.  Lots of sweet bread and like you walked into a bakery, peanut brittle, pretzel (that’s a new one for me)
Taste –  Sweet buttered pastry, sugar cookie, cinnamon bun with icing, French bread
Finish – Warm and rich with that buttered pastry and caramel corn, there is a touch of sour fruit that comes with the alcohol heat that gives a nice balance.  But well in check; doesn’t drink near its proof

Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: No surprise how much wheat is in there, but man does it work well.  So buttery and sweet with bakery flavors.  If you know me, that’s the way to my heart.  But it remains balanced and has a great texture to it.  And the heat is well contained.  I know it’s a special release, but I would love to regularly have this at home.
