Review #: 60
Description: Eagle Rare
Spirit: Bourbon
Background: I previously reviewed Eagle Rare back on Review #19. In short, Eagle Rare is a 10 year old bourbon from Buffalo Trace. I was provided this sample from a friend as a blind mystery and was only revealed as to it’s contents after providing my notes.
Distillery – Buffalo Trace
Bottler – Buffalo Trace
Brand – Eagle Rare
Selection – N/A
ABV – 45%
Age – 10 Years
Nose – Tons of apple! Lots of juicy stone fruit
Taste – A little bit thin. Light vanilla, touch of almond
Finish – Little warmth, cinnamon pastry, slight barrel spice
Score: 5
Guess: ~45% ABV, wheated bourbon? Maybe Weller SR?
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: The nose on this had a very pungent and great fruit blast. But then the taste and finish fell a little bit short of what the smell promised. Not bad but not exciting.
Post reveal, at least I’m getting better at guessing proof, and it was the same distillery. Shows some of the changes that these near-single-barrels can have (I know ER isn’t technically but I don’t believe they really batch it either) as my previous bottle was definitely more cherry, vanilla, and more oak. For around $30 a bottle, they aren’t bad value
