Description: Ledaig 10 Year Single Malt
Spirit: Scotch
Background: Here we have Ledaig, which is the peated line from the Tobermory on the Isle of Mull in the Highlands. Ledaig actually refers to the first name of the distillery that dates back to the end of the 1700s. While Islay is known for it’s punchy, heavy peat, this is supposed to be right up there with them, so let’s see if it matches. Non-chillfiltered and no color added and bottled at 46.3%, it has the stats for it.
Distillery – Tobermory
Bottler – Tobermory
Brand – Ledaig
Selection – N/A
ABV – 46.3%
Age – 10 Years
Nose – Light peat that’s well balanced, cooked pear, lemon rind
Taste – Barley sugar, lemon zest, grilled fruit, honey, black pepper
Finish – A wave of light peat comes in with some heat but it settles nicely, sweet and salty (almost pickle like), peppery
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? For $40-$45, yes. Around $60 where it sits sometimes, probably not.
Thoughts: This wasn’t super peated as some people might think but I think it is rather well balanced and has a fair amount of oomf and flavor to it. Sweet, peat, and citrus are a winning combo in my book. I just wish scotch prices weren’t so ridiculous and spread out here in the states.
