Description: 1984 The Rare Armagnac Collection “Domaine de Pouchegu” K&L Exclusive
Spirit: Armagnac
Background: The second youngest of the Domaine de Pouchegu bottlings available at K&L. Distilled in 1984, it was bottled without additives and at cask strength. Like the 1990, it apparently was aged another 2 years longer than the label indicates. The age comes with a bump in price to $160, but still seems like a deal. Let’s find out if it is.
Distillery – Domaine de Pouchegu
Bottler – The Rare Armagnac Collection
Brand – The Rare Armagnac Collection
Selection – K&L Wines
ABV – 56.9%
Age – 36 Years
Nose – Strawberry, grape jelly, rich and deep oak, jolly ranchers, cherry, dark chocolate Very fruity but well grounded with the oak structure behind it.
Taste – Melon, dry oak, butterscotch, grape present but not very sweet
Finish – Sweetness turns to be very earthy, rainwater, menthol, tobacco, burnt buttered popcorn. Lingering spice and dryness but not tacky.
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? A good value, but I think I preferred the funk of the 1990 (personally)
Thoughts: Another great bottle. This one leans itself to be a bit more straightforward, but there are great levels of depth to it. It didn’t share the funky and oddness that the 1990 did, but it doesn’t need to. This is an easy pour to get lost into every time.
