Description: 1990 The Rare Armagnac Collection “Domaine de Pouchegu” K&L Exclusive
Spirit: Armagnac
Background: K&L Wines came across a series of casks from Domaine de Pouchegu and have recently released them. This 1990 cask is the youngest of the 4 and all are bottled at cask strength without additives, so they carry some impressive stats. The bottle denotes a 30 year age statement but K&L claim that it was kept in casks and not bottled until 2022, for 2 years of further aging. This one retails for $140 so also a very reasonable price. Let’s see if it is worth it.
Distillery – Domaine de Pouchegu
Bottler – The Rare Armagnac Collection
Brand – The Rare Armagnac Collection
Selection – K&L Wines
ABV – 57.7%
Age – 30 Years
Nose – Rich grape, dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow, brown butter, baked sourdough bread. A nice balance of oak and fruit
Taste – Raisin, dark chocolate, sweet oak, a bit of a lactic like sour fruit
Finish – Pumpernickel bread, almost like a dubbel beer like flavor that lingers, funky tannins, tangy bitterness (almost like a gingery spice) and a bit dry, but enjoyable.
Score: 7
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: Really nice. Really approachable with this. It swings a bit with the bright fruit and the tangy oak, compared to really blending together, but in a fun, enjoyable way. Tannins are certainly in check and there’s a sourdough/lactic funk to it that I actually really enjoy. Almost like a really yeasty bread or beer. So I could see some people being put off, but to me this is interesting and tasty.
