Description: Green Spot Chateau Leoville Barton
Spirit: Irish Whiskey
Background: Here we have an offering from Midleton distillery. This whiskey takes the standard Green Spot whiskey (allegedly aged 7-10 years in ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks) and finishes them in wine casks from Chateau Leoville Barton. Bottled at 46% so not the bare minimum, let’s see how it is.
Distillery – Midleton
Bottler – Midleton
Brand – Spot
Selection – N/A
ABV – 46%
Age – NAS
Nose – Some white grape, wintergreen mint(?), sour lemon, sourdough and bready malt. A little bit of airtime brings out some peaches
Taste – Quite sweet: butter cream, white grape juice, barley sugar, peaches
Finish – Decent bit of sweetness and barley sugar, with some tart malt coming in to balance and some pepper that lingers. Not overly complex though
Score: 4
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: I’ll give it that this definitely is different from nearly any Irish whiskey I’ve had. The wine influence is interesting, but ultimately a bit straightforward with sweetness on the palate and finish. I can’t get over the weird sour/mint dynamic with fruit on the nose though.
