Review #3 – Powers Irish Whiskey Gold Label

Review #3 – Powers Irish Whiskey Gold Label

Review #: 3
Description: Powers Irish Whiskey Gold Label
Spirit: Irish Whiskey

Background: Some more Irish Whiskey to start. Here we have Powers Gold Label. Claimed to be the first Irish Whiskey to be bottled and the best selling Irish Whiskey in Ireland (per Wikipedia). Non-chillfiltered and pot-still, but I believe this is still a blend of malt and grain whiskey. Let’s jump in and see how it compares to my first two.

Distillery – Midleton

Bottler – Midleton

Brand – Powers

Selection – N/A

ABV – 40%

Age – NAS

Nose –  Acetone, clove, spice, earthiness
Taste – Strong vanilla, caramel, cinnamon spice
Finish – Quick to heat, harsh, peppery, light oak on the back end

Score: 5
Would I buy a bottle? Possibly to share

Thoughts: Kind of surprised at how much I liked the taste of this one.  The finish holds it back a little as the 40% just holds it back. But the triple distillation and barrel influence make it sweet and inoffensive.  Straight up, I think I do prefer it over Jameson or Bushmills since I definitely have a sweet tooth.
