Description: Maguey Melate “Chuparrosa” Isaac Alvarez Rodriguez
Spirit: Mezcal
Background: This is a mezcal made from Chuparrosa Maguey that was grown for 5-7 years, shredded, and then distilled in a copper pot still and bottled by MM. Let’s taste it
Distillery – Isaac Alvarez Rodriguez
Bottler – Maguey Melate
Brand – Maguey Melate
Selection – N/A
ABV – 49.5%
Age – Unaged
Nose – Some funky cheese, heavy green veggies, iodine, stale/dry earth, kind of a medicinal antiseptic note in there
Taste – Aggressive on the tongue: metallic tinge, rainwater, there is a bit of fruity sweetness (like unripe mango)
Finish – Sharp acidic bite, copper, spicy pepper, iodine, ethanol bite stays on the tongue too long
Score: 3
Would I buy a bottle? No
Thoughts: To sum this up in one word; “Sterile.” Just not for me. The metallic note is just too aggressive and really sharp on the tongue. Just doesn’t have much depth to me for what good notes there are, which are few. Wish the fruit came through in the finish and helped tone it down, but alas.
