Description: Chattanooga Whiskey 111
Spirit: Bourbon
Background: Chattanooga is doing some fun things down in Tennessee to separate themselves from the likes of JD and Dickel but also as a craft producer. The 111 is a cask strength, unfiltered batch of 6-10 barrels (53 gallons) and use a pretty high malt content in their mashbill that contains yellow corn, malted rye, caramel malted barley, and honey malted barley. The kicker, this is only 2 years old. Let’s see if the malt can help counteract some of that youth.
Distillery – Chattanooga
Bottler – Chattanooga
Brand – Chattanooga
Selection – N/A
ABV – 55.5%
Age – 2 Years
Nose – Cola, toasted marshmallow, cherry, honey nut cheerios, a little bit of stale/funky wood, a malty back bone but more earthy than say a scotch
Taste – Milk chocolate, dark caramel, cherry pie filling, butterscotch, brown sugar
Finish – Root beer float, toasted oak, sour cherry, chocolate, a touch on the warm side. There is a hint of grain/young oak but it is really well hidden
Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes. Easily available for under $50
Thoughts: Really crazy that this stuff is only 2 years old. If you nitpick, you can find clues of the youth, but they aren’t in your face and not detracting from the experience. I think the malt brings a bit of a different dimension to it and a nice sweetness. This is a great bottle to pour for people who aren’t aware of craft or just write it off.
