Description: Foursquare 2005
Spirit: Rum
Background: A 12 year old offering of molasses based rum coming from Foursquare in Barbados, it was barreled in 2005 and aged for 12 years in bourbon barrels. A blend of column and pot still distillate, it is bottled at “cask strength” without additives. I put in quotes because Richard Seale has said he considers anything over 50% to be cask strength, not the strength that it comes out of the cask from. This is often noted as a gateway from bourbon/whiskey drinkers to get into rum, so let’s see if that’s true.
Distillery – Foursquare
Bottler – Foursquare
Brand – Foursquare
Selection – N/A
ABV – 59%
Age – 12 Years
Nose – Maple syrup, sweet raspberries, molasses, pineapple, vanilla frosting
Taste – Vanilla frosting, sticky caramel (like a sugar daddy candy), cherries, thick mouthfeel that coats the tongue
Finish – Chili flakes, cinnamon red hots, molasses, nice and long which lead to leather and oak coming in
Score: 8
Would I buy a bottle? Yes
Thoughts: I know this is kind of the “tater” bottle of rum but I can really see how this appeals so much to whisky drinkers wanting to dip their toe in to the world of rum. This highlights a lot of the elements I enjoy in good bourbon, but without having to waiting in line for a bottle or pay ridiculous sums of money. I really enjoy this.
