Review #531 – Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye: The 75

Review #531 – Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye: The 75

Review #: 531
Description: Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye: The 75
Spirit: Rye

Background: 30 for 30: Day 25.  Another Smooth Ambler selection but this time rye.  Selected by “The 75” it is a 5 year barrel and that’s about all I know of the specifics.

Distillery – MGP

Bottler – Smooth Ambler

Brand – Old Scout

Selection – The 75

ABV – 62.3%

Age – 5 Years

Nose – I get some rosemary initially, rye bread, caraway seeds, then sweetness comes in the back with light caramel and some raspberry reduction, pistachio ice cream
Taste – Pretty sweet; milk caramel, maple syrup, milk chocolate, vanilla cake
Finish – Pop of peppery spice, fresh rye bread, some of that milk chocolate lingers, drinks well below 62.3%.  Definitely experience a change from sweet to savory

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? If around $60 or so, I think so

Thoughts: I would have to guess that this is their 51% rye mash as it’s pretty sweet and the rye influence is much more muted than the 95/5s that really blast you with rye.  It’s still a very enjoyable drink and doesn’t taste as high as the proof is.  Certainly delightful and would probably make some fun, high octane cocktails.
