Review #179 – Old Forester Rye

Review #179 – Old Forester Rye

Review #: 179
Description: Old Forester Rye
Spirit: Rye

Background: A standard offering from Old Forester’s portfolio, the rye whiskey boasts a 65% rye, 20% malted barley, and 15% corn mashbill and a price tag around $20, making it a cheap, but higher rye content bottle than many of the competitors in this range. Let’s see how it tastes!

Distillery – Old Forester

Bottler – Old Forester

Brand – Old Forester

Selection – N/A

ABV – 50%

Age – NAS

Nose – Sweet and smoky bbq sauce, bubble gum, banana runts candy
Taste – Caramel, maraschino cherries, a little brown sugar, slightly thin
Finish – Fresh baked bread, the sweetness increases from the taste as the bubblegum and banana runts from the nose come back

Score: 6
Would I buy a bottle? Yes

Thoughts: Cheap ryes can often be polarizing.  I really enjoyed this and at $20, there isn’t a whole lot in that realm that delivers like this.  However, the bubblegum and fake banana note are there like most Old Forester whiskies, so if you aren’t a fan of those, probably stay away.
